After two wins in a row, Welling United head to Poole Town on Saturday in a far more confident mood.
In their last league game, they beat Eastbourne Borough to climb out of the Vanarama National South relegation zone.
Last weekend, Welling commenced their F.A. Cup campaign with a relatively comfortable victory at Whyteleafe. They had a host of chances that they would normally expect to convert in the first half but remained calm and took the lead with twenty minutes remaining when leading scorer Adam Coombes notched at the near post from Lyle Della-Verde’s low corner.
Another Della-Verde corner was headed home by Rickie Hayles in the final minute to guarantee the Wings a place in the third qualifying round when they will host Swindon Supermarine.
That, however, is for another day and the immediate concern for the Wings is to build on their recent form and to start moving up the table.
On Saturday, Welling travel to Dorset to visit Poole Town. The Dolphins have progressed beyond Dorchester Town and Weymouth to become the leading Non-League club in the county. They now sit in seventh place in the league mainly as a result of their form at their Tatnam Ground which has seen them amass 13 of their 19 points.
Their first four games all yielded 1-0 victories, with Maidenhead United, Bishop’s Stortford, Margate and Bath City all unable to breach their defence. When Poole went ahead against Eastbourne Borough, two weeks ago, they harboured hopes of making it five in a row but five minutes before the break, Elliot Romain headed home at the far post. Neither side mustered much in the second period and they settled for a 1-1 draw.
When looking towards the game at the weekend, Welling United manager Mark Goldberg said “It’s a lovely part of the world. I’ll see if my wife wants to come and make a weekend of it.”
One a more serious note he confirmed “We need to get the points. We can’t paint over the cracks. We’re not in the position we want to be in. We want to be moving forward and move on. Two games, two wins is a hell of a lot better than what we had previously.
“I think, going forward now, you’re hopefully starting to see the way we do like to play. It’s good movement and movement creates chances.” Against a team that have conceded just once at home, it could be a fascinating tussle.
