Bradley Ray had a better weekend in the latest round of the World Superbike Championship at Assen.
He finished the weekend with a points finish, taking the last point in Saturday’s race before backing that up on Sunday with a 20th in Superpole and 17th in race two.
The weather once again played a starring role at the TT Circuit Assen in The Netherlands.
Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSBK rider Ray completed Friday’s free practice sessions in twentieth place, returning to the track on Saturday for a third and final practice before taking part in the Superpole, which ran on a wet track. With a time of 1’46”093, Ray again placed twentieth, meaning a spot on the sixth row for the afternoon’s race.
The rain stopped shortly before the race began, leaving a wet track. The English rider decided to put in slick tyres and so struggled to get into a good rhythm in the early stages. As the race went on however, Bradley was increasingly fast, despite having to complete a long lap penalty received at the Barcelona round.
Unfortunately, a red flag that came out seven laps from the finish put an end to both the race and Ray’s recovery, as he was hunting down compatriot Tarran Mackenzie.
Speaking after Saturday’s racing, Ray said: “I’m quite pleased with my race. We made changes to the bike that seemed effective, but the track conditions were very difficult, and I also had to complete a long lap penalty!
“I made good progress in the race anyway and can’t wait to get back out for tomorrow’s races, in the hope the weather is better. Thanks to their team for all their great work.”
Ray was back out on Sunday morning, on a dry track and in sunny conditions, for the Superpole race, in which he placed twentieth.
In the afternoon Brad lined up for Race two, which ran on a dry track but under threatening grey clouds. Getting away well from twentieth, the Brit maintained a consistent pace and was able to avoid mistakes even after it began to rain, crossing the line in seventeenth position having spent a number of laps sitting in 15th position.
Speaking after the weekend came to a finish Ray said: “Definitely not an easy weekend, not for me or the team. The results don’t reflect our efforts or the work we’re doing right now. We have six weeks in which to find some solutions to our problems and arrive in Misano stronger and more competitive.”
