For the first time this season Tristan Ovenden was beaten in the British Rallycross Championship but still managed two podium finishes.
With the return of the championship returned to the Irish home of Rallycross at Mondello Park just outside of Dublin.
A bumper English and Irish entry for both the Saturday and Sunday promised the prospect of some Rallycross of truly epic proportions.
Heading into Rounds four and five after three clear event wins Tristan Ovenden was looking to consolidate his championship lead.
Although not the start he was looking for consistent runs still kept Ovenden in contention securing him the forth grid spot on the second row for the coveted A-Final moving up to third spot on the first lap. A position he would defend from fellow Kent driver Darren Scott to claim the third step on the podium.
Sunday and round 5 saw a shaky start in the first heat on a track slightly slippery after a lot of overnight rain. Heats 2 and 3 saw a first and third respectively. This was enough to secure the final front row spot on the A- Final grid.
Ovenden made an inspired start but was pushed wide on the first corner to remain in the third spot. Steady and consistent driving saw Ovenden successfully defend the place to earn his second third place spot of the weekend and with that hard earned championship points that still see him top the championship table.
Speaking after the weekend, Ovenden said: “It all happened this weekend! We didn’t gel with the track as quickly as hoped but some great work buy the team kept the Goody/Promac Suzuki on the podium for two 3rd places. Thanks for the support all!”
The championship now moves back east to Pembrey in Wales for round 6 on 26th July.
