Nathan Heathcote continued his dramatic debut year of tarmac racing at the high-speed Thruxton circuit this weekend; securing a podium in all three races to lead the Millers Oil Ginetta GT4 SuperCup ‘Am’ class by 49 points.
Having only seen the Hampshire circuit for the first time this weekend, 22-year-old Nathan Heathcote immediately set about learning the circuit; reducing his lap times in the process.
The event started strongly for the Kent youngster, after a day learning the circuit in mixed conditions in Friday’s free practice he went on to secure pole position in the ‘Am’ class on Saturday morning.
Just a few hours later, the opening 12 lap Sprint race saw him convert pole into a fantastic victory as he continued to get to grips with the bumpy and abrasive circuit. With a two race schedule on Sunday, the super-fit Heathcote was looking forward to the pair of 16 lap events.
The morning encounter didn’t go all his way however. Despite facing slippery damp conditions, he made a strong start and was making up spaces before an attempted overtake saw him clip the curb and spin, putting him back down the pack. Working his way through the field, he was able to get back into a podium position on the final lap, securing third place.
Fired-up for the final encounter of the weekend, he was able to round out the Thruxton event with another emphatic victory; taking the win by seven seconds over series rival Colin White.
Nathan now leads the series by 49 points ahead of the next round at Knockhill in Scotland.
Speaking after the weekend, Heathcote, said: “Overall, I’m really happy with how things went this weekend. Thruxton is an amazing circuit – probably one of the most exciting I’ve ever driven as it’s just so fast and wide!
“Apart from the race this morning, things went to plan all weekend and it’s fantastic to leave here with two wins and secure a good points haul for the Championship.
“One of the most heartening things from the weekend was racing with the Pro class drivers, putting in some great overtakes and dicing at the front. I can’t wait for the next round at Knockhill!”
