Gillingham head to Plymouth this weekend looking to extend their current unbeaten run to four games and to get back into the play-off places.
Tuesday night’s dramatic 5-4 win over Hereford United at Priestfield is probably still sinking in for a lot of people associated with The Gills. The comeback from 2-0 and 4-2 down has shown an incredible resolve from a side that had struggled to comeback like that before earlier in the season.
One slight headache for Gills boss Andy Hessenthaler could be what starting eleven to go with, as Charlie Lee scored a brace after coming on as a second half substitute on Tuesday night.
The only thing that might save Hessenthaler from having a problem is that midfielder Curtis Weston is struggling with a knock.
The Gillingham manager has already confirmed eighteen year old Jack Evans will keep his place at right back despite being withdrawn at half time due to fans giving him some abuse.
Saturday will see the return to Home Park for Simon King who has started the last four games for The Gills. King spent six games on loan with the Pilgrims in September and October to get his fitness levels up and will no doubt get a warm reception from both sets of fans.
The rest of the side almost picks itself at the moment, however there could be a surprise return on the bench for midfielder Danny Spiller after overcoming the effects of an ankle injury sustained at Southend in September.
Meanwhile, Gillingham have brought in Reading winger Jordan Obita on a month’s youth loan on Friday afternoon and he is expected to go straight into the squad for Saturday’s game.
Therefore, The Gills could line up like this:
Gazzaniga, Evans, Essam, King, Jackman, Tomlin, J Payne, C Lee, Whelpdale, Kuffour, Kedwell.
Subs: Hawkes, Obita, O Lee, Montrose, Spiller.
With Oxford United (seventh) playing leaders Swindon Town in the 12pm kick off, and Port Vale (eighth) looking like they will go into administration anytime soon, Gillingham will feel there is every chance they could be back amongst the top seven come 5pm on Saturday.
