Charlton surrendered their unbeaten start to the season to Plymouth at Home Park on Saturday.
After a dominant first-half performance, the Addicks’ profligacy in front of goal came back to haunt them after the break.
Jake Jervis’ double was enough for the Pilgrims to take all three points.
Josh Magennis was a surprise starter for the Addicks, replacing the suspended Lee Novak.
Magennis had Charlton’s best chances. In the first half he brought a stunning save from Luke McCormick, who tipped his effort on to the bar.
Then five minutes before the break he had a free header from a Teriqe Fosu cross, but put his effort wide.
Ryan Edwards headed a Jake Forster-Caskey effort off the line with the keeper beaten, as Plymouth’s defence held firm.
The Pilgrims were much brighter after the break, and took the lead nine minutes after the restart.
Jervis was on hand to drill home Edwards’ knockdown. Jervis added a second two minutes from time after a breakaway from an Addicks corner.
Late on, Magennis failed to control a great Forster-Caskey ball in, and McCormack turned a 25-yard Karlan Ahearne-Grant shot round the post.
It was a disappointing result, and performance after the break .
Karl Robinson will have much to ponder on the long journey home.
