Plenty going on in SE7 on the player front on Thursday.
Recently released, Lewis Page, will take part in a trial game at Plymouth on Saturday. Page’s stay at The Valley was ravaged by injury, and Argyle will be mindful of that.
But if he can stay fit, he is an accomplished left-back at League One level.
Ben Amos joined Jake Forster-Caskey and Jonny Williams in exercising an option for a contract for next season.
Amos’ opportunities were very limited last season due to Dillon Phillips’ excellent form. But the Player of the Year is attracting interest from elsewhere, and Amos could be first choice this time around.
The Scottish press reported that Hearts striker, Conor Washington, was close to making the switch to south London, and later it emerged that Alex Gilbey was also closing in on a deal at The Valley.
Gilbey is a free agent after his contract at MK Dons expired in the summer.
The Dagenham born 25-year-old is a box-to-box midfielder who will bring energy to the team. He has also played for Colchester and Wigan.
Both the Washington and Gilbey deals are thought to be at an advanced stage.
It is good to see the club actively recruiting at such an early stage in the admittedly short close season. And it is refreshing to be able to talk about players rather than owners for a change.
Hopefully, the ownership situation will be resolved soon, and focus can be fully on the 2020/21 season.
