Players back for fitness testing
Players back for fitness testing

Just five weeks after the final game of the season against Swindon, the players return to Sparrows Lane today.

This is not the start of pre-season training, the players will undergo two days of tests to assess their fitness levels.

They were given a summer fitness and dietary regime to follow, so that they would be fit when pre-season training begins in earnest.

Any player whose body fat level is above the target figure faces a fine.

It is not clear if the players who have been out on long term loan such as Cristian Ceballos, Naby Sarr and Igor Vetokele will be amongst those being tested.

There will be another session of tests in a couple of weeks time, before the players officially report back at the end of the month.

Karl Robinson is anxious for the group to have decent levels of fitness before the real work begins.

Robinson certainly has a punishing schedule planned for the early part of pre-season.

Following a week at a training camp at Portmarnock, the Addicks will face Crumlin United in Dublin on Monday 10 July, cross to the west of Ireland to face Limerick the following evening, before returning to Dublin for a match with UCD on Wednesday 12 July.

Charlton will return to England the following day, and will end the week with a double header against Welling and Greenwich Borough on the Saturday.

A couple of transfer snippets emerged over the weekend, though neither appear to have much substance at this stage.

Sheffield United centre-back, Jake Wright, is being linked with a move to The Valley.

Chris Wilder recruited Wright from Oxford last summer, and the defender played a significant part in the Blades’ promotion season.

He is left footed, and with Jason Pearce, Harry Lennon, and possibly Sarr available to Robinson next season, Wright does not look the type of player who would be on the manager’s priority list, even if he was available.

There was also a sketchy story linking Patrick Bauer‎ with a move back to Germany. Bundesliga side Darmstadt, and Bundesliga 2 outfit, Union Berlin, were mentioned as possible destinations.

Bauer – along with fellow defender Jorge Teixeira – was widely reported to want a move away from The Valley in the latter months of the season.

Bauer later contradicted the rumours, saying that he was happy at the club and had no desire to leave.

Time will tell, June is the month when player movem‎ent should really click into gear.
