Simon Philip has been elected chairman of Kent County Cricket Club.

The former honorary treasurer of the club succeeds George Kennedy CBE who has stepped down after nine years in the role.

Mr Philip, 54, grew up in Canterbury and played for St Lawrence and Highland Court in the era when they played matches at the county’s headquarters at The Spitfire Ground.

He served as treasurer for seven years after being a member of the group overseeing the £10 million redevelopment of The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence.

He was Treasurer at a time when the finances of the club were turned around, with profitability being considerably increased and borrowings reduced.

The former partner at Deloitte said: “I’m delighted to be appointed chairman at such an exciting time for the club.

“I have gained a close working knowledge of the club’s operations and look forward to building on the legacy of George Kennedy.

“The focus has been heavily on the financial stability of the club but now we can place more emphasis on our core work: winning.

“The committee will work closely with the club’s staff to run a healthy, sustainable business to support that aim.”

Derek Taylor succeeds Mr Philip as honorary treasurer and former Kent all-rounder Charles Rowe becomes the club’s President.

Outgoing chairman George Kennedy CBE and outgoing President Lady Kingsdown OBE were awarded Honorary Life Memberships in recognition of their services.

Chief executive Jamie Clifford said: “The club and committee are grateful to the support of George and Lady Kingsdown at a crucial time in the club’s evolution.

“We face the challenges to come in much better shape with a financially stable business and growing membership.  George’s considerable contribution will be remembered in the history of the club as transformational.”
