An entertaining game at London Road ended with honours even. The Addicks fought back from being a goal down to lead 2-1 before being pegged back to 2-2.Peterborough2

Some of the travelling Charlton fans were given pre-match sweets by Peterborough’s Mr Posh as he walked around the ground.

Chris Powell opted for an attack minded 4-4-2 formation with the injured Leon Cort being replaced by Matt Taylor at the back. Bradley Pritchard and Johnnie Jackson were flanked by Lawrie Wilson and Callum Harriott in midfield with Ricardo Fuller and Danny Haynes up front. Dorian Dervite and Jon Obika dropped to the bench.

Charlton started off brightly and could have scored twice in the first few minutes. First, Lawrie Wilson struck the underside of the bar, then Danny Haynes narrowly failed to apply the finishing touch to an exquisite cross from the right by Fuller.

After weathering the early storm, Peterborough gradually got a foothold in the game and took the lead midway through the half. Posh had some players with real pace and one of them, Danny Swanson, drove on from just inside the Charlton half to fire beyond David Button to give the hosts the lead.

Charlton’s confidence ebbed at this stage and they could have fallen further behind but for a timely save by Button from another of Peterborough’s flyers, Nathaniel Mendez-Laing. Powell would have been pleased to have got his team in at half-time with just the one goal deficit.

It was Posh who came out of the traps quickly at the start of the second half, Lee Tomlin, hitting a post in the opening seconds. This time it was Charlton who clawed their way back into the game though. Ten minutes after the restart Callum Harriott released Jackson who steered the ball past Bobby Olejnic and just inside the far post. Three minutes later the Addicks were in front. A Morrison header from Solly’s cross was only cleared as far as Haynes, who rifled the ball into the roof of the net.

Charlton then had chances to wrap up the game but failed to take them. Michael Bostwick levelled things up after 71 minutes with a speculative effort that went under Button. The keeper will be diasppointed with the goal.

The Addicks had to defend stoically at the end with Jackson clearing one effort from the line and Button making a good save from another.

It was a ‘mustn’t lose’ game for the Addicks and a draw was a fair reflection of how the game had transpired.
