Adrian Pennock wants more from his Gillingham side after he lost his first game in charge at Oldham.
Josh Law’s 39th minute free kick was all that separated the two sides at Boundary Park with the home side winning only their fourth game of the season, making it the double over The Gills for the season.
Having seen his side fail to get going in the first half, Pennock wants to see more effort from his side if they are to climb the League One table:
”I’m bitterly disappointed because I’m a supporter here as well. The first half was unacceptable.”
“I thought they had men in their side and we didn’t. We have to come to places like this and roll up our sleeves, and that was unacceptable.”
“The ‘keeper made a few saves in the first half from long throws but we didn’t do enough from open play. The second half we were better.”
Gillingham had two claims for a penalty that were both turned down, with Bradley Dack going over in the box twice, but Pennock was unsure as to whether both should have been given:
“I did honestly think Dacky got fouled for the first challenge, and I didn’t see the second one, but that is the referee’s decision and you have to move on.”
It took a set piece for the game to be settled with chances to win the match at both ends, with Pennock reflecting on a costly free kick on the edge of Gillingham’s area:
“Fair play to him (Law), it was a very good free-kick, but I’m disappointed in giving a free-kick away in that area. He punished us. That was the real bit of quality from the game.”
Pennock now has a week to work with the players and pick them up ahead of Saturday’s trip to league leaders Sheffield United.
The Head Coach will undoubtedly be looking to bring reinforcements into Priestfield with a goalkeeper, central defender and striker the main targets.
