Adrian Pennock wants his Gillingham side to stick together after Tuesday night’s 3-1 loss at Swindon Town.
Despite going ahead through Cody McDonald’s 10th minute strike, three second half goals saw The Gills drop all three points against one of their relegation rivals.
Having dropped to 19th place in League One, just three points above the relegation zone, Pennock was hoping his side pick themselves up ahead of Saturday’s trip to Bury:
“I am saying the same things every week, the same goals are going in, but we have to lick our wounds and move on to Saturday, which is another very big game.”
“They (Bury)are another team that are around us. The other teams around us have won tonight and we have lost, so the boys have to realise that these are massive games.”
“It’s not just tonight, it has been like it all season. We have to snap out of it, because if not we will be in big trouble, but there are a few games to go yet and the ball is still in our court.”
“They have got to stop feeling sorry for themselves. They know that Swindon were better than us tonight, but we have to turn up against Bury, like we did on Saturday (against Southend), and get three points.”
Pennock was complimentary about a Swindon side that didn’t give up despite going a goal down:
“When they go ahead they are a very hard team to play against because they are tough and it’s very hard to get the ball back, but if you’re not doing your job then it makes it harder.”
With the bench looking rather inexperienced on Tuesday night, Pennock is hoping to have a few players back ahead of the weekend:
“Fitness-wise, the players are okay; I think it’s a mental thing. Hopefully the likes of (Bradley) Dack, (Mark) Byrne and maybe (Chris) Herd could be in contention for Bury, which will give us more numbers, but it is so important that we stick together.”
Meanwhile, Paul Konchesky seems set to seal a move to non league side Billericay Town.
