Charlton Athletic manager Bob Peeters was in attendance at the Priestfield Stadium on Tuesday evening, watching the Gillingham v Bristol City game.
The match was the first leg of the Southern Area Final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.
The question is, who was Peeters looking at? One player who has long been linked with a move to The Valley is City’s left sided midfielder-cum-striker, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas.
In all competitions, the 25-year-old Emmanuel-Thomas has scored 33 goals in 130 starts, plus 71 appearances from the bench, for Arsenal, Blackpool, Doncaster, Ipswich and Bristol City.
The Robins won the game 4-2, with all four goals being scored by on loan striker, Matt Smith. Smith played on the non-league circuit before joining Oldham from Solihull Borough.
The giant 6’6″ striker has frequently been used as a substitute in his career and famously came off the bench to score twice, as the Latics put Liverpool out of the FA Cup at Boundary Park in 2013.
After beating Liverpool, Oldham faced Everton at Boundary Park in the fifth round. Smith scored the stoppage time equaliser that took the game back back to Goodison Park. Though the Latics lost 3-1, Smith again scored Oldham’s goal.
He has also played for Macclesfield on loan but his cup exploits attracted the attention of Leeds. He moved from Elland Road in the summer to join recently relegated Fulham.
He has struggled to make an impact at Craven Cottage and was loaned to Bristol City in November.
The 25-year-old has made 66 starts in all competitions, plus 79 substitute appearances, netting 36 goals. Smith is the type of tall target man that Charlton are currently lacking.
One player who might be a surprise target for Peeters is Gillingham’s left-back, Joe Martin.
The former Tottenham youth player joined the Gills from Blackpool and the Dagenham born defender is now 26.
Rhoys Wiggins has suffered a number of foot injuries in recent seasons and Peeters has struggled to find cover for him this term. Morgan Fox is Wiggins’ natural deputy but has recently been left out by the head coach.
Martin might be able to provide decent cover without being too expensive an option.
