Peeters reflects on Addicks point

It was a rollercoaster of emotions at the New York Stadium on Saturday.Bob Peeters

Rotherham started quickly but once the Addicks settled into the game, they dominated proceedings in the first half and went in a goal up at the break. But for heroics from Millers keeper Scott Loach, Charlton’s advantage would have been more.

This is how Bob Peeters saw the first half:

“I think first half, except for the first 10 minutes, we controlled the game.

“We were leading 1-0 but we knew they were going to make it physical second half.

“They put the long ball in early with a lot of tall guys but I think we didn’t give anything away until the goal.”

The game changed after the break. Steve Evans’ team again started brightly but managed to keep the momentum going.

Rotherham peppered the Addicks’ goal with early diagonal balls to the far post. Charlton dealt with the threat ably enough but were undone by a lapse from Tal Ben Haim. Peeters continued:

“Then they grew in confidence and at that moment we need to hold on to get the result.

“Even with all of that at the end with Frederic Bulot I think we had the best chance to score the winner.

“People make mistakes but we also ask them to keep on playing football and that won’t stop.

“It was our possession and we needed to play it simply back to the goalkeeper but our central defender misses his touch and you concede a goal, that’s football sometimes.

“People make mistakes and afterwards they defended well,” said the head coach.

The shot from Frederic Bulot was the closest either side got to snatching a winner, though Stephen Henderson had to make a smart save in stoppage time.

Bulot cut in from the left and his deflected effort went behind Loach and trickled agonisingly slowly towards the goal but did not have enough pace to cross the line.

Peeters summed the game up like this:

“We  didn’t let him (Gudmundsson) play on Tuesday because of his groin but we know he has extraordinary qualities.

“He gives you something more on the ball, at the end he was a bit tired so we replaced him but I’m very happy with his goal.

“Before the game people would have said a point in Rotherham isn’t a bad result but after the way we played first half maybe we should have won it.

“Credit to them they came back physically and they got a point,” concluded Peeters.

Peeters was maybe being generous about his expectations from the game. Both he and the Charlton fans would have anticipated a first away win of the season.

Middlesbrough recorded a comprehensive win against Brentford on Saturday and moved up to fifth.

Boro visit The Valley on Saturday and will give the Addicks a tough game.
