Holcombe Hockey Club have confirmed that Men’s 1s goalkeeper Ollie Payne will be leaving the club at the end of the 2024/25 season. 

Payne, who has played at two Olympic Games for Great Britain, is in his fifth season at Holcombe Park and has formed a key part of their Men’s 1s in recent seasons, also stepping into the vice-captain role this season to support Captain Rob Field.

The goalkeeper has been with Holcombe for multiple campaigns at the top end of the Premier Division as well as their most recent Euro Hockey League campaign in Barcelona in October 2023, with qualification earned, in part, due to Payne’s heroics throughout the season and League Finals weekend. 

Holcs currently sit second in the Premier Division ahead of Phase Two, with Payne set to compete in the revamped Hockey India League (HIL) before returning for Phase Two and Phase Three. 

He has amassed more than 50 international caps in an impressive career to date and the club have wished him the very best of luck at Amsterdam for the next steps in his journey. 

Always approachable, Payne has proved an inspiring figure for junior and senior players alike since leaving the University of Durham and he will always be welcome back at Holcombe Park. 

On leaving the club at the end of the season, Payne said: “Holcombe is a special club and I have loved the time I have spent here.

“I came here fresh out of university and felt welcomed straight away. 

“There are many good people within the club, which makes it special. 

“While my time at Holcombe is coming to an end at the end of the season, I am still excited to build on the good start to the season we have made this year. 

“A special thanks goes to David South and Brian FIeld for their continued support as well as Jules [Halls], Barry [Middleton] and Kwan [Browne] who have all contributed to this club going forward in a positive direction.”

Club President South added: “Ollie has been an incredible servant to Holcombe and a key figure in our first team for many years.

“Last year, he shared his ambition to challenge himself in Europe and we were fortunate to have him remain with us for another season.

“His performances have been consistently world-class and it’s no surprise that he’s now pursuing this opportunity.

“While we’re sad to see him go, we fully support his decision and wish him every success.

“It’s been a privilege to work with such a talented and dedicated athlete.”
