Oxford City v Welling United preview

Two defeats for Welling United were followed by two draws and now they will be hoping that they can follow Saturday’s victory with back to back wins.

Their defeat of Hungerford Town at Park View Road last Saturday took them out of the bottom three and starting to look up.

Three players made their Welling debuts in that game and all impressed meaning that Jamie Coyle has options and personnel meaning that he can change tactics as and when needed.

Jack Jebb claimed two assists with dead ball deliveries but there was much more to his game than just that. Jeffrey Monakana, on a one month loan from Sutton United, looked lively down the wing and will be an even bigger threat as he gains full match fitness.

Finally, Lloyd Macklin came on as a substitute and has a completely different game to starting strikers Tom Bradbrook and Bradley Goldberg, both of whom were on the score-sheet against Hungerford. Bradbrook went off injured last Saturday but Coyle said that it was only precautionary and expects him to be back in contention.

Coyle was also pleased that there was not a midweek game following Hungerford as it meant that there were two training sessions. Tuesday was used to build up fitness whilst Thursday was working on structure ahead of their game at Oxford City this weekend.

They had a pretty tough afternoon last Saturday, crashing 7-1, in a performance labelled as ‘unacceptable’ by manager Mark Jones. Goalkeeper Craig Hill has left the club and his place has been taken by 20 year old goalkeeper Jack Stevens, on loan from Oxford United.

On top of that, they’ve also signed Rob Sinclair after he was released by Forest Green Rovers. The midfielder had three seasons in the Football League with Stevenage Borough and his battle with Jebb may be an interesting sub plot.

Their season started with a 3-2 defeat at home to St. Albans City and was followed by a 1-0 defeat at Hampton and Richmond Borough. They then won two in a row, 3-0 at Whitehawk and 2-0 at home to Hungerford before last weekend’s trouncing.

In last season’s corresponding fixture, Ollie Sprague conceded two penalties, both converted, as Welling crashed 2-1 on a very bobbly pitch. Danny Waldren scored Welling’s goal. There will not be the same concerns this season as they laid a 3G surface in the summer.
