Following Saturday’s disappointment Welling United have another opportunity to end their disappointing away form at Oxford City.
Their defeat at Dulwich Hamlet was the hosts first league win in 2019 whilst Welling are winless away in the Vanarama National League South since claiming three points at Bath City at the end of September.
Last Tuesday, they claimed their first evening match league win of the season and will look to add to that with their first midweek away league game in 2018-19.
At home Oxford have a decent record having won seven, drawn two and lost four however their form has tailed off of late and they are yet to win a league game in 2019.
When the two teams met at Park Virew Road in September, Welling claimed the three points through an exciting three-two victory. Kabongo Tshimanga put Oxford ahead against the run of play in the tenth minute. Anthony Acheampong cam close to equalising when his effort came back off the bar before Brendan Kiernan did level. Danny Mills thought that he had put Welling ahead but his effort was chalked off for a very tight offside.
After the break Oxford came out strongly but it was Welling’s turn to score against the tide. David Ijaha headed home Craig Braham-Barrett’s cross before Oxford had a great chance to equalise but Matt Paterson clipped the bar with a penalty.
Paterson, who subsequently joined Welling before moving on to Havant and Waterlooville, wasn’t to be denied and restored parity with seven minutes remaining when converting Ben Jefford’s low cross. Welling showed the value of keeping going right to the end when Acheampong slotted home the winner in injury time.
On Saturday, Welling were only able to name three substitutes and with none of their injured expected to return, Steve King will be hoping that none of the thirteen who played at Dulwich suffered any after effects.
