Local racer Tristan Ovenden took victory in terrible conditions at his home circuit of Lydden Hill in the Swift Rallycross series.British Rallycross Championship Round 5, Lydden Hill

There was a bumper entry for the latest round of the season with 12 cars all targeting victory which made it a tough task from the outset for Tristan.

In possibly the worst conditions in recent years. Where the circuit resembled a river rather than a race track. Tristan, however made a solid start with a third place in the first heat. As the weather worsened Tristan remained constant with a second in Heat two and a third in the final heat. This was enough to secure second place on the grid for the A-Final alongside championship rival Chris Mullen.

A good start by Tristan as well as Mullen with another local driver Darren Scott diving for the gap between them from the second row. Unfortunately three into one doesn’t go and Mullen was clipped in the mayhem veering across the track causing the whole pack to take action.

Tristan was well placed and seized the opportunity to take the lead into the first loose section. With Dave Ellis in hot pursuit Tristan put his experience and natural talent to good use not putting a foot wrong and started to open up a gap.British Rallycross Championship Round 5, Lydden Hill

With the mayhem behind him all Tristan had to do was to time his joker lap well which he took on the penultimate lap. He took the checkered flag a full 2 seconds ahead of his nearest challenger.

Tristan has now extended his lead to eleven points with only two rounds remaining. The championship now moves north to Croft on 18th October where another podium finish could seal the championship for Tristan.

Reflecting on a good weekend in testing conditions, he said: “A solid result given the challenging conditions. I am absolutely delighted with securing the win especially at Lydden”
