Tristan Ovenden sealed the 2014 Swift Rallycross Championship with an excellent performance in the last round at Croft.
The ever popular driver from Canterbury headed into the penultimate event at Croft with an 11 point championship lead.
Ovenden had only one goal, and that was to push as hard as possible to extend that lead. No mean feat as the bumper entry of 15 cars boasted the likes of Rallycross legend Pat Doran, BTCC and WTC driver Harry Vaulkhard as well as Ovendens championship rivals Graham Rodemark and Chris Mullen.
In a near perfect days racing which saw Ovenden finish second in the first heat by less than half a second. The clinching first place in the remaining heats which was enough to put him on pole position for the A-final.
After the trademark close start which saw the whole field head towards the first corner nearly all together. The advantage of pole served Ovenden well as he was first to hit the apex just ahead of second placed Rodemark.
Showing his experience and racing pedigree Ovenden drove the near perfect race leading out the field from the first corner to the drop of the chequered flag, in doing so sealed the 2014 Swift Rallycross Championship with a round to spare!
Sunday saw Ovenden compete in the coveted British Grand Prix, an event that sees all classes run together. He managed to drive to third in the B final, no mean feat considering cars with far more power and speed were racing against him.
Speaking after winning the 2014 title a delighted, Ovenden said: “The racing was absolutely brilliant, the car felt great from the start with the 2 heat wins to be on pole for the final and go on to win was about as good as it gets.
“It was only afterwards that we realised we had won the championship! The grand Prix was really good fun too. Very close racing with some quick cars and I was pleased with third in the B final.”
