Canterbury based Rallycross driver Tristan Ovenden and his red and yellow team headed over the Irish Sea to Mondello International Circuit, situated just outside of Dublin where rounds 5 and 6 of the British Rallycross Championship was being held last weekend.
For round 5 on the Saturday the Goody Demolition backed driver got straight down to business recording fastest times in both qualifying heats, something he has not done since his graduation to Supercar. This earned him the pole position for semi final 1. After an unfortunate joker lap which cost him valuable seconds, he finished in second spot.
It was more than enough to gain him an outside front row start in the 10-car final. After multiple false starts the race got underway, Ovenden seized the opportunity and got the best start possible easily heading into the first corner leading the pack. A position that he would maintain even emerging in the lead after taking his joker on the fifth lap.
After a late night gearbox change the Canterbury Team were ready to attack Round 6. The day started wet and continued in that vein for a large proportion of the day. After both of the qualifying heats Ovenden was sitting in joint second place after recording a third and fourth respectively.
The tough track conditions took their toll as he came home in forth place in his semi final after a dodgy wiper impaired his vision for the duration of the race. This gave him a tricky third row grid start for the final. Ovenden brought his Citroen DS3 Suercar the car home in sixth place securing valuable championship points.
Ovenden said of the weekend: “What an amazing day Saturday was literally the stuff of dreams. I’m so pleased to be able to deliver an event win in Ireland with the team we have it is a special moment.”
“We ask a lot of the team that supports us and the only thing I can do is thank them all so much, it’s just an incredible time.”
The Team’s Junior driver Will Ovenden experienced a solid weekend of results over-coming some tricky track conditions in his first overseas event, recording consistent third places on both days.
