The Rallycross season moves to Knockhill this weekend and Canterbury’s Tristan Ovenden will be back on track.
He will be looking to extend his lead in the championship with another consistent performance on a track that he enjoys.
Speaking ahead of the race weekend Tristan took the time to reflect on the opening rounds of the season and his own performance.
He said: “I should have won the first race really, but I have learned a lesson for another day and I’m never unhappy with a podium. Second round was a bit if a lottery with the first corner accident so I was happy with second. Yep you just keep scoring well at every round.
“It’s always the aim to win!! I did win at round seven of last season at Pembrey Circuit in Wales, which was really special and I crashed out of the lead at round eight at Croft, I was really hard on myself for that, so to win the Grand Prix at Croft the next day made a mends for that.”
It has been a few weeks since Tristan was on track racing, although he keeps busy when he isn’t racing his Suzuki Swift.
He added: “It doesn’t seem like five minutes ago actually. I go motor crossing with my sons most weekends, so we are away a fair bit.”
Knockhill is a popular track and it is clear that Tristan loves to race around the circuit even if it does take a long time to get there.
He said: “I like the Knockhill circuit to race on, it’s the journey to it that’s the problem!! It is an eleven hour drive from us. The track itself has good flowing gravel section which I really like oh and the view of the Firth from the start line on a clear day makes it unique.”
Tristan races a Suzuki Swift and he went on to explain what they are like to race and how they differ from the road cars.
“The cars in our class are pretty much a standard Suzuki Swift sport with up rated suspension, exhaust, ECU and the necessary safety features and that’s about it. This makes it very affordable which is why it appeals to us. The cars are very evenly matched so it’s more about driver and setup than deep pockets.”
Finally we asked Tristan about his motorsport background and how he came to become involved in the sport.
He said: “I’ve raced mainly motocross (still do a bit) and then super moto for years and now I’m a bit older I don’t bounce like I used to and my self-preservation meter has gone way up! So it’s easier for me to be competitive now I’m strapped in a metal box!”
