Orpington’s James Smith picked up some good wins as he represented England at the Hungarian Junior & Cadet Open.
But the 16-year-old Whitgift School pupil was doubly unlucky as he was edged out on countback in the group stage of both the singles and team events.
In the singles, Smith had a superb start as he beat Spain’s Sergi Grau 3-2 (6-11, 11-7, 11-9, 3-11, 11-9) and followed up with a 3-1 (9-11, 11-6, 11-7, 11-5) victory over Lim Dao Yi of Singapore.
However, a 3-1 (3-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-9) defeat to the host nation’s Oliver Both left three players on two wins each – and Smith was the one to be eliminated.
In the team event, Smith featured alongside Joe Clark and Sam Kwan and they started with a 3-1 defeat to Portugal. A 3-2 win over Poland followed and Smith then picked up a crucial 3-2 (10-12, 11-7, 9-11, 11-9, 11-7) victory over Shawn Chua as Singapore were also beaten 3-2.
But with three teams finishing with two match wins apiece, it was Portugal who qualified on countback.
In the doubles, Smith and partner Kwan were eliminated in the first round by Dimitrios Stamou & Konstantinos Stamou of Greece, going down 3-1 (10-12, 11-8, 11-4, 11-9).
