Charlton beat Oldham 4-3 in a thriller of a game at a sunny Boundary Park on Saturday afternoon.
The Addicks surrendered a two goal lead, recovered to lead 4-2, only to concede a late goal to a Latics team playing with ten men.
It was a belter of a game. For half-an-hour, Karl Robinson’s team played some great stuff and were totally dominant. But after the penalty, the game developed into a battle.
Johnnie Jackson came in for Jay Dasilva, and Karlan Ahearne-Grant replaced Josh Magennis as the lone striker.
Ricky Holmes gave the visitors the lead after 18 minutes. He picked the ball up in midfield, drifted past his man before unleashing a 30-yard thunderbolt into the top corner.
Tariqe Fosu doubled the lead three minutes later. Bringing down a deep cross from the right, he cut in before hammering a shot past Ben Wilson.
John Sheridan reacted immediately by bringing on Ousmane Fane to replace Ollie Banks, and Fane was the catalyst for Oldham’s recovery.
After 33 minutes Patrick Bauer was adjuged to have held down an opponent in the box and referee, Ross Joyce popinted to the spot. Craig Davies converted the penalty.
Six minutes after the break, Eoin Doyle levelled the scores following a defenesive mix up between Patrick Bauer and Jason Pearce, which left the striker with a clear run on goal.
nfluential substitute Fane was shown a second yellow card after 54 minutes, for a challenge on Chris Solly. The decision enraged the home fans, but it was a clear yellow card offence.
Charlton took advantage of their numerical advantage to restore their two goal advantage.
First Billy Clarke placed Fosu’s pass wide of Wilson, then Joe Dodoo latched on to a weak back header to run on and score a debut goal for the fourth time.
The Addicks should have sewn the game up nine minutes from time. Dodoo shot straight at the keeper when Fosu, to his right, was unmarked.
A minute later, Jack Byrne reduced the arrears to just a single goal, but Robinson’s team saw the game out to take the three points back to London.
Robinson will be thrilled with the win, but less so with some of his team’s defending.
The win took Charlton into third place in the league table, and they will hope to continue their winning run when Southend come calling next Saturday.
