Gillingham defender Connor Ogilvie believes that his side still have a shot at the Play Off places but knows that the mountain that the Gills face to reach their goal – starting with the visit to Priestfield of Ipswich Town this weekend.
“It was great to get the winner and to win the game Tuesday,” Ogilvie told us. “The boys were buzzing after the game – we worked very hard and nullified their threat after going one down early on.”
“We had a “plan B” that we’d worked on and we implemented that and thankfully it worked. We managed to get the goal back before Vadaine (Oliver) put us in front. They then got another goal just before half time, and luckily enough, I managed to pop up and get the winner!”
“Playing directly seems to suit me. We seem to get a lot of joy off that and we’re able to put teams under pressure – we’re playing percentages as if the ball’s in their box more often than not, we know that we’re going to get chances and goals which is what happened on Tuesday night.”
“I couldn’t believe the space I had in the box after the knock down and I managed to stick it in the net, and we were able to go on and win the game which was ideal.”
Tuesday’s strike was the defender’s fourth goal of the season. “I just want to get as many goals as possible,” Ogilvie said when asked about setting any goal scoring targets. “I haven’t set a target – I just want to contribute so that we pick up the points and hopefully, I’ll be able to get a few more before the end of the season.”
“We know that it’s going to be tough to get into the top six now as obviously there are a lot of good teams up there at the moment and we’ve played a few more games than some of the teams, but we know that it’s not impossible and we’ll keep believing until otherwise.”
“We all want to strive to be the best – as a group, we’ve got to believe that we can still achieve the Play Off spots and until it’s impossible to do that, we will keep fighting for it!”
“Top six has always been our aim and that’s still our goal. Like I said, it’s going to be a tough ask but it’s not impossible that mathematically we can’t do it. Personally, I just want to get more goals and more clean sheets and if we can do that then we’re going to be doing alright and get the results.”
With Ipswich Town coming up at the weekend, the Gills will try and do something that no other Gillingham side has ever done – beat the Tractor Boys at Priestfield! Ogilvie is in no doubt about the task ahead – “they’ve got some great players, but we’ve got a reasonably good record against the top sides so hopefully we’ll be able to turn them over on Saturday.”
“We’ll work on what we know about them, but we know that we’ll have to suss them out during the game as they’ve got a new manager – hopefully, we can take on board all that we’ve been told about them previous to the new manager’s appointment and take it into the game and get a result!”
