Ogilvie – Evans has been a great help!

Connor Ogilvie has let KSN into the current life of a professional footballer during the Coronavirus pandemic and admitted that boss Steve Evans was being a great support for all the Gillingham players.

He told us, “The Gaffer’s been sending out texts seeing how we are and giving us phone calls – he’s been keeping tabs on us making sure everyone’s OK – he’s really been a great help to all of us!”

“Keeping active means following the programmes that the Club has set us – keeping ourselves ticking over for when we eventually do come back, which hopefully will be soon!”

“The programmes are tough believe me – the Sports Scientists send us the weekly “rota” and all the boys have to crack on and we then update them on what we’ve done throughout the week.”

“It does feel like a pre-season and is probably about the equivalent – it’s all about trying to keep the match fitness with not training or playing for how many weeks now, it’s just a matter of keeping our fitness up and being ready to go when we get that call!”

“Everything is very much in the air at the minute as to when we may start back and obviously the health of everyone in and out of football is the priority at the minute.”

“As I said, we have just got to keep ourselves fit and who knows when the call will be, but we’ve just got to be ready for it and ready to go!”

Ogilvie, who was Evans’ first permanent signing at Priestfield and has won many plaudits during the games played – including netting some vital goals from left-back – and has clearly enjoyed the season so far as he said, “It’s been an enjoyable season as to the results we’ve managed to get and where we are in the League.”

“I feel like we’ve got a good team and a good core – there’s no bad eggs and everyone’s together – and so in that sense it’s a good feeling, but I’m not surprised with our season as we’ve got the quality in the changing room to be competing where we are.”

“We’ll want to improve next season and the season will help whether it’s finished or not! The next step will be getting in and staying in the Play Offs – just outside it at the moment obviously, but I definitely feel that we can improve on and do one better than where we stand at the minute!”

When the Gills’ season was suspended, they were preparing for a home game with Fleetwood Town – Ogilvie explained what happened.

“It was strange.” he admitted. “as we saw a lot of things on the news and you’re so up in the air yourselves that you don’t know where you are with what’s going to happen.”

“We all then get the text that was sent out saying that the game was off and it’s been a bit of a strange one really – it was gutting as coming after the Sunderland game where we came from behind to leave a good feeling in the camp, and in truth we’d have probably got three points from the game.”

Looking ahead, Ogilvie added this appeal to the Gills faithful. “Please stay indoors and stay safe! We can’t wait to be back at Priestfield and getting the place rocking again…”
