As has been the case for every match played in February, Welling United are on their travels again this weekend.
Their trip this Saturday is to Nuneaton Town for a game crucial to both sides battle against relegation.
Although this will be the Wings’ first game for two weeks, things have not been quiet at Park View Road.
Steve Pitt has been tempted away from Bishop’s Stortford to join Jody Brown’s management team and will play a lead role in player recruitment, scouting and contractual issues.
There has also been the announcement that Welling’s next home game will be shown live on BT Sport. The Wings’ commercial team has been busy selling the opportunity for businesses to promote themselves on ‘live’ TV on a Sunday when there is hardly any other football being played, and there are still perimeter board spaces and sponsorship deals available.
On the pitch, Welling warmed up with a ‘behind closed doors’ friendly on Tuesday against a Dagenham and Redbridge XI. Welling enjoyed a morale boosting 1-0 win courtesy of a Dominic Vose goal.
Nuneaton hold the penultimate spot in the Vanarama Conference Premier, six points behind the Wings having played one game more. Their manager, Liam Daish, had a short spell as caretaker manager at Weliing before enjoying a long stint in charge of Ebbsfleet United.
Since the turn of the year, they have recorded an impressive 2-1 win at Gateshead and two 0-0 draws along with their for defeats.
Earlier in the season, when they met at Park View, Harry Beautyman put the Wings ahead but Gareth Dean equalised four minutes later. Beautyman restored the Wings’ lead just before the break and a second half brace by Tyrone Marsh made for a comfortable Welling victory.
However, Welling won’t want a repeat of their visit last season when they dominated most of the game only to be caught out twice in the second half. Andrew Brown and substitute David Hibbert claimed the goals to give the hosts the three points.
Brown will be boosted by having Anthony Jeffrey back from suspension whilst Sam Berry, on loan from Sheffield United, should make his Wings league debut following a solid performance against the Daggers.
This match could prove pivotal in the fight for safety, and thanks to the generosity of Welling supporter David Weir in subsidising the cost of a supporters coach, the team can expect a good following there.
