Welling’s miserable start to 2015 continued with another defeat, leaving them just above the relegation zone.
Whilst they had played well without luck in their previous two games, they did not look like taking anything out of the game at Nuneaton.
They might say they weren’t helped by the poor pitch or heavy winds, but they failed to apply themselves and did not put in the commitment required to halt their poor run.
Early on Jamal Fyfield had a shot blocked and Dominic Vose hit a half volley wide but that was as good as it got for the visitors.
Adam Wheeler had a long range effort pushed over by Jonathan Henly.
Henly was called into action again making an excellent save from George Maris then recovering quickly to smother the loose ball as the Nuneaton strikers closed in.
James Armson and Gus Mafuta both shot wide as an uneventful first half drew to a close.
It all went wrong for Welling early in the second half from their own corner. Darren Purse’s shot was saved by Max Crocombe, and taking advantage of the Wings’ centre backs being up for the corner, the Nuneaton goalkeeper released his clearance quickly.
Although, Welling scrambled away the first effort, Adam Walker was on hand to finish gleefully.
Excellent defending from Fyfield saved Welling from going further behind.
Anthony Jeffrey drew a good save out of Crocombe and Karl Duguid had an effort deflected into the side netting but Welling looked bereft of confidence and ideas
Andrew Brown shot wide and then had a header saved before Maris fired over as the hosts looked to close out the match.
The day was summed up for Welling in injury time when Henly went up for a free kick only to see the delivery float harmlessly over.
