Kevin Nugent will be in charge when the Addicks face Port Vale at The Valley on Saturday.
Nugent will act as caretaker boss until Charlton appoint a new permanent manager.
Nugent will be assisted by first team coach, Simon Clark, and Chris O’Loughlin. Former Sint-Truiden boss O’Loughlin recently joined the coaching staff at The Valley, and there has been widespread speculation that he could be the club’s next manager. The Addicks were quick to stress this would not be the case.
There are reports in the national press that Charlton spoke to former Wigan manager Gary Caldwell on Wednesday, but a deal seems unlikely.
Another rumoured target, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, has distanced himself from the Valley job.
An announcement before the weekend is unlikely, and Nugent looks sure to still be in charge for Tuesday’s trip to Bristol Rovers.
Nugent has injury problems ahead of the Port Vale game. Ricky Holmes has a broken bone in his foot, and will be sidelined for several weeks.
The club’s head of medical services, Alastair Thrush, said:
“Ricky has sustained a small fracture of the second metatarsal of his right foot, which came from a challenge where he ended up making contact with the underside of an opponent’s boot.
“Initial x-rays were clear but there was continued swelling. Further imaging on a CT scan showed a feint line that could be suggestive of a fracture. We are managing it as such and that will include a period of immobilisation initially and then progressive rehab from there.

“We anticipate that he will be out for around six to eight weeks.”
Holmes’ injury could open the door for Jordan Botaka. The Leeds loanee has yet to start a game for the Addicks, but has impressed in his brief cameo appearances.
Nugent will also be without striker, Josh Magennis, who picked up a hamstring injury playing for Northern Ireland against Croatia on Wednesday.
Charlton will be disappointed that the injury was picked up in a friendly match.
