Scunthorpe defeated Plymouth 2-0 at Glanford Park on Tuesday evening to secure their spot in the play-offs.
Hakeeb Adelakun and Newcastle loanee, Ivan Toney, netted the goals. The Iron were good value for their win and could have won by more.
Argyle badly missed muscular frontman, Ryan Taylor, and rarely threatened. Without Taylor, the Pilgrims had no focal point to their attack and were forced to play a different style. Their play-off hopes now hang by a thread.
The win saw Scunthorpe leapfrog Charlton into fifth, and they have a nine goal better goal difference than the south Londoners.
The Iron entertain Bradford on Saturday, and given their goal difference advantage, a draw will be enough to secure a fifth place finish for Nick Daws’ side.
The Addicks need a draw at Rochdale to guarantee a top six finish. Lee Bowyer’s side have a six goal advantage over Plymouth, so it would take something like a 3-0 defeat at Spotland, coupled with a 3-0 win for Argyle at Gillingham, for Charlton to miss oit.
The most likely scenario is that the Addicks will finish sixth and face Shrewsbury for a place at Wembley.
If the schedule follows the same pattern as last year, the first leg will be played at The Valley on Thursday 10 May, with the return at the New Meadow on Sunday 13 May. The second leg will probably have an evening kick-off.
Charlton have already sold over 1,000 tickets for the game at Rochdale, but fans who can not make the trip north, can follow the action live on Sky Sports.
