Guy Luzon named an unchanged starting XI and substitutes bench for Charlton’s second venture to the East Midlands in three days.
Despite sluggish starts in both halves, the Addicks will consider themselves unfortunate not to have come away with all three points.
Simon Makienok had the best chances to seal a win for the visitors, and was involved in three major incidents in a four minute period midway through the opening half.
The big Dane should have put Charlton in front after 21 minutes, when he headed a delightful cross from Morgan Fox over the bar from close range.
Three minutes later, he inadvertently blocked an on target effort from Cristian Ceballos, then a minute after that he headed Ceballos’ pinpoint cross wide.
Johann Gudmundsson went close on the half-hour mark when his free-kick skimmed the bar.
The Addicks had to defend stoically in the early stages of the second period, but midway through the half, they came desperately close to taking the lead. Reza Ghoochannejhad’s right-wing cross found Makienok, whose downward header was superbly kept out by Dorus de Vries.
With 69 minutes on the clock, Fox delivered another terrific cross which narrowly evaded Ghoochannejhad and was turned behind for a corner.
Patrick Bauer connected with the flag-kick, and his bullet header brought another great save out of de Vries.
Three games into a tough opening month, Luzon’s team remain unbeaten and have only conceded one goal.
The head coach was pleased with his team’s display but felt they should have won. He had this to say after the match:
“I’m very disappointed because we deserved to win the game and take the three points.
“We played very well and were very organised in defence. In offense we had a lot of chances to score and to win the game.
“Especially in the second half, we played positive football on the ground, had good combinations and had good chances to score.
“The positive side is we came to another away game and tried to influence, play our football and try to win the game,” said Luzon.
Next up for Charlton is the encounter with relegated Hull at The Valley on Saturday.
