A much changed Charlton side put up a brave fight against a strong Norwich side, but the hosts class prevailed in the end.
The Canaries had speed of thought, and their crisp, accurate passing got them behind the Addicks’ rearguard on numerous occasions, but the visitors defended stoically.
Charlton started brightly, and took the lead after five minutes. Tariqe Fosu played Novak in on the right, and the striker’s composed finish nestled in the far corner of Michael McGovern’s net.
The lead lasted 15 minutes before Josh Murphy – a thorn in the Addicks’ side all night – levelled.
Another strike from Murphy, plus goals from Marley Watkins and Tom Trybull were enough to sink Karl Robinson’s team.
The manager was happy with how his young team performed and said this after the game:
“It’s a harsh industry. I think sometimes a 4-1 can be a drubbing and our result on Saturday was a 4-1 game.
“Here today, the two last goals were deflections and they got a bit of luck and their finishing was excellent.
“But we had a chance at 1-1 when we simply had to score, Josh Magennis had a chance at 2-1 which was better than all the chances that they created, which we didn’t take.”
