Kent captain Sam Northeast was pleased with his side’s performance after this week’s ten-wicket County Championship win over Glamorgan.
Having seen their first fixture of the campaign completely washed out at Worcester, and their game away at Leicester last week again affected by the elements, Northeast was content to have opened their account for the season in their first home game.
“We had two days of cricket in the first two games, so it was good to get started”, the skipper said after the match.
“It was a pretty good result – we weren’t perfect, but we got the job done in the end.
“It’s disappointing that the Worcester result obviously hasn’t gone our way, and then two days of play at Leicester… it’s a disappointing start, but the best way to respond was with the win here”, he said.
New opening pair Daniel Bell-Drummond and Tom Latham – the New Zealand international making his debut for the club – had a record breaking start in the match; the first Kent opening pair to make two century partnerships in the same County Championship game since Arthur Fagg and Arthur Phebey, all the way back in 1954.
Both made fifties in each innings – Bell-Drummond continuing his fine early season form be registering scores of 84 and 86 not out, and Latham making 53 and 79 not out in his first appearance for Kent.
“They both look in really good form”, Northeast said of the new opening pair.
“A right and left-handed partnership is brilliant, and I think it’s the first time since 1950-something that we’ve had two hundred [opening] stands in the same game. Those two look really good – Deebz looks in great touch at the moment, Tom obviously adds that bit of quality up the top, and it bodes well for the future.”
Kent strike bowler Matt Coles was injury-hampered throughout the match, having left the field injured during Glamorgan’s first innings. Northeast praised Mitch Claydon and Darren Stevens for taking up the mantle in the rest of the game, with Coles unable to bowl as many overs as would otherwise have been expected.
Northeast was also hopeful that the fast bowler would be fit for Kent’s next County Championship outing, at home to Gloucestershire at Canterbury, starting this Sunday.
“Mitch and Stevo put in a seriously big effort considering Colesy went down in the first innings”, he said.
“We’ll wait and see [about Coles’ fitness]. There were some good signs in that second innings to come back as he did. We weren’t expecting him to bowl at all in the second innings, so it was a bit of a bonus.
“He’ll be fine – he’s a fighter and a battler, so he’ll come through it no doubt.”
With a 215-run partnership between David Lloyd and Graham Wagg looking to have brought the visitors back into the game on the afternoon of the third day, Northeast was happy to see his side close out the victory.
“We missed a few opportunities to get them six down at one stage, which was a bit of a kick in the teeth at the time, and then the ball went a little bit soft and we were waiting for the new ball”, he explained.
“Luckily we bowled well with the new ball. Stevo and Mitch came back and bowled really well there. We were always ahead of the game – the little chases of 180 can be difficult, but Deebz and Tom did really well to finish it off.”
