Kent batsman Sam Northeast has been described as the “real deal” by his coach where he is playing in Australia.

Scorchers coach Brad Murphy says Northeast is easily good enough to play for Queensland.

Northeast, 23, who joined the Coast from Kent for the winter, struck an unbeaten 139 as the Scorchers lost on first innings to University in a XXXX Gold first-grade clash in Brisbane yesterday.

Murphy said the opener, the scorer of 3240 runs for Kent at 32.72, had proved to be an invaluable member of the side on and off the field.

He described him as wise beyond his years and a “massive” influence on his teammates.

“He’s a real good player. He’s a f****** fantastic player,” Murphy told Sunshine Coast Daily.

“I just can’t rate him highly enough. We’re going to benefit greatly from him. Hopefully some of our guys will join him with 100s.”

“The reason we’ve got him is so his professional attitude rubs off on the rest of the young guys.”

Chasing 366 in the two-day clash, Northeast batted all day.

He reached his 100 off 147 balls while his fifty came off 72 balls and in all he hit 14 fours.

Despite the knock the Scorchers, came up short and were all out for 265 in the 86th over.

The home side finished on 0-55 in its second innings after declaring its first innings before the start of play yesterday.
