Last week’s thrilling win over Plymouth reignited Charlton’s hopes of snatching a play-off place.
Lee Bowyer said the team needed to win six or seven of their remaining ten games if they were to be involved in the promotion shoot-out. A tall order given the Addicks’ run-in. But the performance against the Pilgrims suggested it was not impossible.
When he looked at the remaining fixtures, Bowyer would have Northampton down as a banker win.
The Cobblers are struggling at the wrong end of the table, and have only won one of their last ten games. They have not won any of their last five matches at Sixfields.
Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is flexible in how he organises his team, so Bowyer will have to give some thought about the system he chooses.
It may be a game where the manager should let the opposition worry about how he is going to set his team up.
Bowyer will have more options available for this game; Stephy Mavididi is fit again, and Jay Dasilva is also back in training. Ezri Konsa and Josh Magennis are available again after international duty, so the manager has much to ponder.
Charlton face Rotherham at The Valley on Monday, so Bowyer will need to make full use of his squad over the holiday weekend.
So impressive was the performance a week ago though, he may opt to field an unchanged team.
The Addicks could look something like this:
Amos; Dijksteel, Bauer, Pearce, Page; Aribo, Reeves, Forster-Caskey, Fosu; Zyro, Ajose.
Subs: Phillips, Konsa, Dasilva, Sarr, Marshall, Mavididi, Magennis.
The referee will be Gavin Ward from Surrey.
To keep their play-off aspirations alive, this is a game that Charlton have to win.
