With the build up to the 2017/2018 season well underway, our weekly report from the previous seven days also makes a return.
Throughout preseason we’ll be keeping up to date with the county’s teams as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.
After an impressive season in the National League last season, Chris Kinnear’s Dover Athletic have lost a number of players this summer including the high profile departure of their top scorer from last season Ricky Miller.
Kinnear has looked to increase the size of his squad this week through the signing of full back Josh Passley. The former Dagenham and Redbridge defender was on the pitch for the Whites’ previous two friendlies against Gillingham and Charlton and has signed a one year deal as the Seasiders’ tenth signing of the summer. They travel to Folkestone Invicta on Saturday.
Heading up the M20, Maidstone continued their pre-season campaign on Tuesday with a convincing 5-0 win over Ashford United at Homelands. It’s been a busy week at the Gallagher Stadium, on Wednesday it was confirmed that Crowborough Athletic would ground share with the National League club before Jay Saunders announced two new players on Friday.
Midfielder Jai Reasson joined early in the day following a season at Boreham Wood and Eastleigh in 2016-2017 before 19 year old Harry Willard joined later in the day. Willard spent the opening games of this summer ith Gillingham but Saunders was able to persuade him to join the Stones instead. It’s unknown if the two midfielders will line up for their debuts in France against Arras in France.
Staying in the National League, it’s been a quiet week at Ebbsfleet United. They were victims of a 2-0 defeat at Stonebridge Road to Cambridge on Tuesday night but Daryl McMahon hasn’t unveiled any new signings since the announcement of Luke Coulson. They play Southend tomorrow at home.
There has also been little activity at Hayes Lane this week on the transfer front. Bromley beat Beckenham 4-0 last weekend before Whites XI sqauds lost 2-1 to Erith and Belvadere and 4-0 to Glebe in midweek. Their first team squad is back in action this Saturday against Welling at Park View Road.
The Wings are coming off the back of a 5-2 win at VCD on Tuesday. They opened their summer with a 3-0 loss against Charlton and their campaign continues tomorrow. Welling fans will be boosted by the news that Ben Jefford has returned after time at Sutton whilst former Brentford winger Christie Pattison also joined Mark Goldburg’s side.
Elsewhere in the north of the county, Dartford snapped up the signature of Warren Mfula this week. The attacker spent last season scoring at will for Croydon, finding the net 44 times last year and could be set to make his debut when Tony Burman’s side welcome Cambridge to Princes Park this weekend.
One of the most entertaining pre-season matches of the week was won by Folkestone Invicta. They followed a 2-2 draw with Millwall up with an impressive 4-2 win at Herne Bay this week.
Elsewhere in the newly named Bostik League, Tonbridge Angels drew 2-2 against Concord Rangers this week at Longmead. Concord face another Kent team this weekend when Margate make the trip to Essex whilst the new pitch at Hartsdown Park continues to go down. Angels will travel to Phoenix Sports tomorrow before hosting Dover Athletic on Monday night.
