Jack Nolan has enjoyed a successful start to his Gillingham career and has been talking to KSN this week ahead of the trip to Yorkshire to face Doncaster Rovers at the weekend.
“It’ll be a difficult game at the weekend,” the Gills winger told us. “We have started well, so have they and it is probably not the best of times to be playing them to be honest!”
“We have to play everyone twice and we will go up there and try to win the game, but treat it like any other game.”
“I think that everyone in this League is beatable and so for us we will travel and try to continue the momentum that we have now in the League and hopefully go there and get the three points.”
“Saturday’s win over Chesterfield I think was a good example of where we are. Our backs were against the wall at times – we dug deep; we will have to do that plenty more times this season.”
“We are only four games in, and we know that there is a long, long way to go, and we will definitely be in the same position again, but it’s great that as a squad we have showed we can do it and that we can hopefully do it again when we need to.”
Nolan then explained how the move to Priestfield came about. “I found out about the interest,” he explained, “I came down to speak to Mark Bonner and the deal was more or less sort of agreed by the time I got back up North, which was good for me to hear – I just felt really wanted and for myself, to get back down nearer home in Southampton was a no-brainer.”
“I did not have anything to go off with the Gaffer as he was new to the Club but from his time at Cambridge and what he achieved there, and speaking to him, he is a down to earth guy as well away from football.”
“For me it was a question of could I see myself playing for him? Absolutely, and then when the interest was about coming here, it was a case of seeing if I could make it happen, which thankfully they did!”
“It was great to get the first goal out of the way against Carlisle on Day One rather than ten or twelve games in and not having a goal, so I was delighted but more happy that we got off to a good start in the League winning 4-1″
“We have continued that now and we “just” have to keep our foot on the pedal and keep going.”
“I enjoy taking set-pieces and always have trusted my ability, A lot of it is hitting certain areas and people timing their runs,” Nolan said smiling recalling his sumptuous free-kick that was met perfectly by Robbie McKenzie for the game’s only goal against Chesterfield last Saturday.
“Hopefully if we keep getting that right, everything will fall into motion really. That said, I do think that defending set-pieces is probably more important though as you do not want to concede goals yourself from them.”
“It is something that the whole team has worked hard on, and we will continue to do during the season, so hopefully we see the rewards from that!”
