Karl Robinson is looking to bring a striker in as soon as possible, but with just Ricky Holmes’ salary to invest, his options are limited.
Lower league clubs are unlikely to let a player who meets Charlton’s criteria join them on loan, they would want a transfer fee.
An out of favour Championship front man is a possibility, but the Addicks would probably need his parent club to pay a chunk of his wages.
The most likely solution is a Premier League youngster. Top-flight clubs will often continue to pay the bulk of the player’s wages as long as he is getting regular first team action.
There is less than two weeks to go before the transfer window closes, and ideally Robinson would like to bring a player in before Saturday’s game with Walsall.
One player who looks certain to leave the club is versatile defender, Ezri Konsa. Konsa has appeared in his favoured centre-back position, as well as at right-back and in a defensive midfield role for the Addicks.
Everton are front runners for his signature, and Robinson is keen for the player to remain at The Valley on loan for the rest of the season.
The Toffees are unlikely to agree to that arrangement, so the manager will have to consider his defensive options.
Jason Pearce and Naby Sarr are currently injured, and Patrick Bauer has also had a spell on the sidelines this season.
Robinson may have to rely on versatile youngster, Anfernee Dijksteel, for back up.
