Although a draw at a full time team might be considered to be a good result, the Welling United players left Eastbourne Borough disappointed about not having won. Post Match Danny Bloor gave his thoughts to Mark Doig.
After the game Wings manager Bloor said “You’re coming to a side that has big expectations and if you’d asked me this morning, I would have taken a point. The boys are sitting in the dressing room with their chins on their chests. They felt they should have won.
“To equalise and then take the lead it was just gutting that we couldn’t hold on but there’s no disgrace in coming to a club like Eastbourne Borough, full time, the new owners have got big ambitions. They expect promotion so no complaints as far as I’m concerned.”
Despite conceding a soft penalty, only Welling captain James Vaughan approached the referee. Bloor said “I have well disciplined sides. I’ve been managing for a long time, some might say too long, and I’ve never had any trouble with the officials and I think you have to respect their job. It’s not an easy job and it’s very important to me that our players do behave.”
For the second week running Welling went behind before coming back to lead. Bloor was not surprised. “You see the sides that myself and my management team assemble and the one thing you can do is give your all and play for the badge whether it’s Welling United, Dartford or Eastbourne Borough.” he said “You have to play for your badge.
“We’ve got some tired legs in there. It was a bit like a cup tie, it was a bit frantic. It was one of those games. There was a lot of pressure. I’ve managed both of these teams but I’m loving managing Welling United.”
Even when behind, Welling continue to try and play football without resorting to playing the long hopeful ball. “We don’t do that.” he continued. “We try and play football. Other sides, we won’t name names, do try and play that way. It’s just not what we do. We look forward now to having a rest this evening and tomorrow and then we look forward to next Saturday and the F.A. Cup.”
