Ahead of Gillingham’s Easter fixtures, defender Max Clark has been giving KSN his views on just how important the games with Crewe Alexandra and Harrogate Town are to the Gills play-off hopes.
The Gills go into the weekend on the back of last weekend’s 3-2 win at Morecambe and Clark said, “It was such an important win at the weekend, to come from behind twice shows the spirit in the group and I think it was a massive for us ahead of the Easter weekend and how important the next two games are!
“If we can get a win on Friday, it keeps them within reach of us and puts us right up there and we need to take care of the game, taking one game at a time.”
Clark was part of the Stevenage side that won promotion from League Two and was asked about the comparisons; he said, “We are a tight group and at this time of the season we all have to stick together and you saw at Morecambe the lads that came on helped the team massively, it was a real team effort and shows the spirit in the group.
“When you’re not playing its difficult, but to react the way the guys are I think is so important especially at this time of the season, a tight group who go out and get three points and the win Saturday has really driven us on to go again on Friday and to be where we are right now’ it’s exciting, the boys are all excited and ready for it. We have a group that can do good things for the last six games.”
Clark has had to work hard to get into Stephen Clemence’s starting eleven – “I’ve enjoyed it,” he said, “I am just trying to take each game as it comes. I am enjoying playing and to help the team is the most important thing right now.
“When you are out of the squad it is difficult, but it is about how you react to it, and we have a group that will react in the right way and the right manner. We all want the best thing for each other. When there’s eleven playing out there, we all back each other and I think that is the most important thing and I think it is what makes you successful the staff, players, fans all coming together as one. The fans that travel away miles from home have backed us all season and we are thankful for that!”
“But we need them of Friday to come out in their numbers as they have done all season and support us and back us as it does give us an extra man out there especially at Priestfield, as they’re so loud and it’s so important for us!”
“We’ll take confidence from the last time we were at home against Grimsby I thought we were on the front foot, more aggressive often than not, and we followed that with the win at Morecambe and go into Friday and there’s no reason why we can all back in that and get the fans excited going into the last few games and there’s no reason we can’t be right up there and nick a spot!”
