Fresh from their first league win of 2025, Gillingham head to South Wales this evening looking to secure another victory.

The 1-0 win over Morecambe at Priestfield on Saturday has sent a ripple of confidence running through the club and a real sense that John Coleman’s side will now have more than enough to secure their League Two status for another season.
Robbie McKenzie’s late winner secured those vital three points that sees The Gills climb further away from the drop zone and a win tonight could propel the Kent side up the table and will mean fans can start to breathe a little easier after a difficult start to the year.
Coleman will be expected to keep faith with the side that started on Saturday and has no new injury concerns.
Victory ovee their opponents could see Gillingham leapfrog Newport into 16th place and crucially could be as much as 15 points clear of the drop zone this evening.
A lack of goals has been a real problem for The Gills this season, having bagged just the 28 in their 33 games, but in that time, they’ve also only conceded 35 meaning they have one of the tightest defences in the league.
Tonight Coleman and co will be hoping his side can at least return to Kent with a point ahead of Saturday’s clash with Bradford City at Priestfield.
Newport will be no pushover though and have had an indifferent season themselves, but have proven to be a decent side at home.
With hundreds of Gills fans making the long trip to South Wales, they will be hoping to see the same spirit and work rate they’ve seen under Coleman, but maybe with more quality in front of goal.
Should the season crawl to a mid table finish, thoughts will already start to turn towards next season and who will be in charge, which players will stay at the club and what direction it heads next.
In the meantime, it’s all about tonight and 90 crucial minutes. A win and the optimism from Saturday will continue. Lose and fans will rightly start to feel the side need to look over their shoulders once more.
