Enoch Muwonge scored a brace from the penalty spot to give Welling United victory over New Salamis in the London Senior Cup.
They were made to work hard by their Isthmian League North opponents but progressed to the next round courtesy of Muwonge’s prowess from the spot.
Early on Will Wood, back from his loan spell at Cray Wanderers, slung over a cross that evaded David Kamara and the angle was too tight for Lewis White. Kamara was able to get on the end of the next cross delivered by Zuriel Otseam-Taiwo and his clever flick beat everyone but came back off the post.
Antony Papadopoulos swung in a deep cross that was just out of the reach of Taylor Curran before Welling missed the best chance of the half. Panny Boxer brought Kamara down in the box but Reuben Rabstein read Kamara’s intentions from the spot and saved comfortably.
Sam Bayford hit a long shot that whistled just wide before Welling had one more opportunity shortly before half time when Muwonge’s shot was beaten out and it came out too wide for
Kamara to reach as he followed up.
Immediately after the interval, Welling conceded. Micah Jackson was given too much room on the edge of the penalty area and his curler inside the far post gave Javarn Pitterson no chance.
Papadopoulos was given an opportunity with a free kick after Muwonge was brought down and he beat the wall but not Rabstein who parried it out to safety. Muwonge was not to be denied, though, and he twisted and turned on the bye-line before being brought down for another Welling penalty. He took the responsibility himself and walloped it into the corner.
Although Welling enjoyed plenty of possession after that, they did not create many clear cut chances. TJ Bramble had a shot deflected past the post and Taylor Curran was unable to hit the target from a Wood far post corner.
White had a long range shot saved comfortably and it appeared that the games was heading for a penalty shoot-out until Ezekiel Williams clipped Muwonge in the area in the final minute of stoppage time. Despite attempts to put him off, the Welling live-wire composed himself and sent Rabstein the wrong way.
There were no further chances in the additional seven minutes and Welling now await the outcome of Cockfosters v Charlton Athletic U23s to see who they play in the next round.
