Chris Powell was expected to meet with owner Roland Duchatelet this week, with reinforcements for his beleaguered squad believed to be top of the agenda.
Charlton are drifting at the moment and although they played reasonably well against Birmingham, they never threatened to take the game by the scruff of the neck.
Powell’s tactics and substitutions have been called into question but an influx of class and experience to supplement the recent foreign arrivals is badly needed.
The South London Press has highlighted four players Powell would like to bring to The Valley and they all meet the necessary criteria.
Richard Cawley has good contacts within the club, so the named players will be serious targets for the Addicks. Whether they are able to land them all is another matter though.
Crystal Palace’s diminutive midfielder, Jonny Williams, was thought to be likely to join Blackpool. The Tunbridge Wells born 20-year-old is a Welsh international and has made 11 appearances for the Eagles this season.
Williams made 29 league appearances in Palace’s promotion winning side last season and 14 in the 2011/12 campaign, so is well versed in the rigours of the Championship.
Powell also wants to bring Queens Park Rangers’ vastly experienced winger, Shaun Wright-Phillips, to the club.
Now 32-years-old, Wright-Phillips has been a peripheral figure at Loftus Road this season, making just 12 league appearances.
Wright-Phillips would add pace and guile from the flank and would deliver a good supply of crosses. Younger brother Bradley was a cult hero at The Valley and wasregularly serenaded with the, “he’s better than Shaun,” chant.
Shaun would be a real threat at Championship level and would welcome the opportunity to play regularly.
Much travelled Irish international, Leon Best, would thrive on the service that Wright-Phillips would bring. Best has only made 8 league appearances for Blackburn this season, scoring 2 goals.
The 6’1″ Nottingham born 27-year-old should be in his prime and would be the focal point of the attack. Like Williams and Wright-Phillips, Best has Premier League experience.
The last member of the quartet is another with experience in the top-flight. Luciano Becchio made his name at Leeds but his switch to Norwich has not really worked out.
Becchio has made just 10 league appearances for the Canaries since joining the Carrow Road outfit last January. In total, he has netted 86 goals in his English career, a strike rate of a goal every three games.
Now 30-years-old, the Argentinian will want to play on a regular basis.
All four of the players would add quality to Powell’s squad. The manager would welcome having more options at his disposal as his team head into a busy end to the season.
The combination of the condition of the Valley pitch and an unusually long cup run has left Charlton with a backlog of fixtures.
Bitter rivals Millwall travel to Yeovil on Tuesday evening and entertain Bolton at the Den on Saturday. By the time the Addicks return to league action against Queens Park Rangers on Saturday week, they could be cut adrift of the safety zone.
Experienced heads will be needed if that psychological hurdle is to be cleared. Charlton fans will be anxiously awaiting news of new faces arriving at the club.
