After his championship hopes were effectively ended at the previous round, Kent racing driver Alex Nevill heads into the penultimate round of the Britcar Trophy at Donington Park this weekend with a relaxed attitude, but still a desire to add to his win tally.
Last time out at Oulton Park, Alex’s title charge took a serious hit in the first race of the day when the number 12 Dragon Sport Renault Clio Cup car suffered steering damage as a result of car to car contact at the first corner.
The Dragon Sport by Amigo Motorsport team were able to repair the car
and send it back into the race, but the time lost while the car was fixed meant that Alex and his teammate Matt Hyde didn’t complete enough distance to be classified as finishers, and therefore weren’t awarded any points.
Of some consolation was a second place finish in the second race of the day after Alex made his way through the pack in the first half of the race after starting from the rear of the grid. This result helped the duo to maintain their position of second in the championship standings, but the gap to first is now big enough that class leaders, High Row Motorsport, have a chance to seal the Clio class title around in advance this weekend.
The positive is that this takes any remaining pressure off Alex for this weekend at Donington Park, where the Britcar Trophy will be a support race to the “Convoy in the Park” International Truck Prix.
The shorter National layout that’s in use for this meeting holds some great memories for Alex, as it was the scene of his first ever car races in 2018 which he won. As such it’s always a track he enjoys visiting.
“Donington holds a lot of good memories for me and as such I love going there”. Alex enthused.
“It’ll be great to be part of a bigger event again alongside the Trucks and I’m sure it’ll be a great atmosphere. Although the championship is as good as over, that allows Matt and I to race without any pressure and we can take some risks and have a lot of fun as we try to finish the year on a high.
The National layout really lends itself to close tight racing and I’m sure the Clio class will put on a show as always”!
Round 6 of the Britcar Trophy will feature the usual 20 minute qualifying session followed by a pair of 50 minute races at 14:10pm & 17:35pm respectively. Both races will be live streamed on the British Automobile Racing Club’s YouTube channel.
