Kent batsman Brendan Nash is keen and raring to get the 2014 season underway after a winter in Australia.

Former West Indian international Nash, 36, is about to start his third season at The Spitfire Ground, St Lawrence, having made the best part of 2,000 runs in his two years at the club so far. His efforts for the club saw him rewarded with his county cap during last season’s Canterbury Cricket Week.

And, with a number of new faces joining both the backroom team and the playing staff at Kent, Nash is raring to go in his third campaign in county cricket.

“I think there’s been a bit of a new vibe around the group at the moment – there’s a few new support staff and a few new signings, and I think it’s created a little bit of excitement around the group. I’m looking forward to the new season”, he said.

Nash hopes to start and continue playing the vital role in the team that he has in his two years at the club so far, telling KSN “If I get the opportunity, I think I’ve done the work and things like that, so I’m chomping at the bit!”

Nash spent the off-season in Australia, and told KSN what he had been doing to keep himself busy during the break.

“I was back in Australia and did a little bit of coaching and played a bit of local cricket. I didn’t play a whole heap but I did a lot of the coaching side of things and kept myself fit and got ready for coming back here.”

Nash performed excellently in both Championship cricket and one-day cricket for Kent in 2013, although he admitted that it had been an up-and-down type of season. One of the highlights of both his, and Kent’s season as a whole, was Nash’s innings of 199 against Gloucestershire, before he had to retire with exhaustion, having played a fantastic innings in helping the side to the necessary 411 to win on the final day.

“It was a funny old season”, he said.

“Although stats-wise it didn’t show I went too badly personally, obviously as a team, we didn’t do as well as we would have liked.

“My personal season was a little bit up and down for my liking. Obviously when I was up I was quite good, but then I faltered a little bit as well at times. There was a stretch of a few games where I didn’t really contribute how I would have liked to. I base myself on consistency, so that’s something I really want to try and do better this year.
