Most successful weekend for Smith

Aron Smith enjoyed his most successful weekend for Airwaves Racing in the British Touring Car Championship at Thruxton over the Bank holiday.Aron Smith 1

He finished in the top ten in all three of the weekends races and is now looking to build on that in the rest of the current season.

Talking exclusively to Kent Sports News, Aron gave us his thoughts on qualifying and the race weekend as a whole.

Speaking about qualifying, he said: “It’s never easy to start a weekend off like that so yes it wasn’t ideal! Everyone in Airwaves Racing was at the track for a solid six hour debrief to go through everything with a fine comb to improve on race day. I knew the team would put everything into making it right so I wasn’t too concerned about another tough weekend.”

The six hour debrief after qualifying obviously paid off for the team as they came out fighting on race day and it helped them score good points.

He added: “I’m always happy once we move forward and race one was a bit of a test session for ourselves. We went a different way with our set up so it took me a while to settle into it but once I had gotten my head around it we became one of the quickest cars on the track.”

He added: “Believe it or not it wasn’t the plan!! It was one of those times when everything went silent and I just held on for dear life. Thankfully we escaped uninjured, sure our Airwaves Racing car is far too pretty to hurt!

“I was really happy with our comeback, when I first came past the pits and saw P25 on the pit board I nearly got sick. I didn’t even realise there was that many cars!

“Once I got back into the race I found myself picking them off one by one and some of these cars had out qualified us the day before so that’s testament of how much the team improved my car.

For the final race of the weekend Aron was up there fighting at the right end of the race and that is just what he wanted to be doing.

He said: “It was a great feeling to get the car to where I wanted it and made the previous late night all worthwhile. All those cars had last season to develop a Thruxton set up and Airwaves racing bridged that gap in one weekend which I think it’s unbelievably impressive.

To come away with the best result for Airwaves this season to date is great. We had a lot of guests down this weekend which witnessed our level of teamwork and how we improved. I was still the same driver on race day as I was on Saturday, the only thing that changed was our car so the result is really thanks to the team.

It looks as though the team has really turned a corner and can now move forward for the rest of the season, something Aron agrees with.

He added: “I like the sound of turning a corner. It’s our strongest weekend to date and I’m certain that we are making inroads with our car, we are moving forward and I’m predicting it’ll carry on like that.

There are now five weeks until the next race at Oulton Park and we asked Aron what he will be doing with his time up until the next round of the BTCC.

He said: “Downtime is for losers!!! Instead we’ll be flat out further developing our car, now having these three race weekends under our belt we can see a general trend with our car and what we need to do to make it work.

“I took the bank holiday off from training but by this stage have already started back, you can never get complacent so I prefer to stick at it to make sure I’m in an even better position for the next race. A bit of testing would be nice to try out a few more set up tweaks so hopefully we’ll get the chance. I can guarantee that we’ll turn up to Oulton Park stronger than we’ve been all season.”
