Gillingham goalkeeper Glenn Morris is SKYBet League Two’s Player of the Month for September.
Gillingham’s forty-one-year-old goalkeeper has been awarded the prize after a string of fine performances and has been talking about the award.
“It’s a great honour,” Morris admitted, “It is not normally a keeper who would win that sort of award, but I am really pleased to have been awarded it.
“But it is not something that I would have won without the rest of the team because they are the ones who put their body on the line to get on the team sheet – I am just there to do my job which is at the end of the day to save the ball, but it’s brilliant!”
Morris who already has four clean sheets to his name this season went on, “I really do feel like I am doing my job making the saves, the boys really have been brilliant, and I am enjoying making the saves and that is the main thing and has kept me going!
“We are all in it together, there have been a couple of games where we have been down to ten men, and that challenge of keeping the ball out of the net.”
Morris who signed a new contract in the summer admitted that the award had come as a surprise. “You never know in football,” he said.
“It throws so many surprises out, but the chances of me being Player of the Month in September? No chance! You never know what is going to happen, you just do not – you have to take any chance that you are given and hopefully I have done that at the minute, but you cannot look too far ahead.”
“You must keep grinding out the performances and results, next game, next game, that is all that you can do!”
Mark Bonner added his congratulations to his keeper by saying, “I have never had a goalkeeper win the award before – I have had nominations in the past who have not won it.”
“But anytime one of your players gets player of the month, it is amazing because number one you must be deemed to have had a better month than four hundred other players who have played in the League that month.”
“It must perfectly coincide with the calendar from the first of the month to the very last day of the month, so it is not four good weeks which is always tough, and he must have done well!”
“And Glenn has, he’s done well, but he will be the first to praise everybody else and say that others have helped and defending is a team game, but at the same time, as well as the clean sheets, he has helped us keep some with some brilliant saves and when he is having to celebrate becoming the oldest player in the Club’s history, it’s probably nice for him to celebrate being good rather than being old!” Bonner joked.
Before finishing by saying, “That said, I am sure he is delighted that he gets the recognition for that and as he nears six hundred games as a professional which is an amazing achievement, to collect this award, and it’s the first that he has had, we are so happy for him and we celebrated that properly with him – it is a great testament to everybody, it’s great for the goalkeeping “union” that push each other every day and as I always say, any individual awards are a credit to everyone, but we are all really pleased for Glenn!”
