Yiannis came out the lake swim of 1000m in 16:06 minutes and in 4th place. His run which was 5k was over a minute faster than anyone else in 18:05 minutes which sealed the Gold medal for him and in a time of 35:19.
Yiannis said he thought he had a bad swim as his legs and arms felt dead after a few hundred metres with the lake temperature being 27 degress and feeling like he couldn’t push anymore. He then got into transition and went down the wrong row. He said he has never made a mistake like that before; he panicked as he was sure he was in the right row. He then found his trainers two rows away and headed off to the run and gave it his all. He saod he felt awful going into the run and was just thinking about getting to the finish.
He overtook the leader on the 3rd lap but wasn’t sure. Once finished he was announced as the champion and couldn’t believe it. It was a great end for the GB aquathlon team for him. Winning was an amazing feeling. He said he couldn’t of achieved this without the support of his family, friends, coaches and sponsors. We did it!
He said he has achieved so much in the 3 years and can leave the team knowing that he never expected it when he took up running in 2012 and couldn’t swim back then. His advice to anyone taking up sport is no matter your ability just keep at it and work hard and it will pay off. His is now moving to other sporting challenges.
In 3 years for the British Triathlon Team Yiannis has achieved the following:
Captain the GB Aquathlon team in 2017 & 2018
European Bronze medal in 2016 on his debut
3 top 10 World championship finishes.
Simon Jones of Canterbury Harriers also competed and finished an impressive 6th in his Age Group 40-44 despite having injury problems this year and limited running time. He was 8th out the water in a time of 16:38 minutes and picked up a few places on the run with a total time of 35:38.
