Motorbase Performance drivers Ross Wylie and Phil Dryburgh secured another strong points finish in the British GT Championship last weekend.
They secured a top six place finish in the championship’s blue riband event – the Silverstone 500 – during a three-hour race.
The incident-packed 500km race delivered non-stop drama with three safety car deployments during its 180 minutes with extreme changeable weather conditions adding to the challenges faced by the drivers. Against an incredible line up of 51 GT3 and GT4 cars competing on the Northamptonshire track, Wylie and Dryburgh posted the 14th fastest time in the #8 Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3 during Saturday’s qualifying session.
An outstanding opening stint from Dryburgh saw the Scot move up into 2nd place during the opening 40 minutes of the race, a drive that later saw the Scot presented with the Blancpain Gentleman Driver of the weekend.
With Wylie re-joining the race in 3rd after a swift pit-stop from the Motorbase crew the pair did well to avoid numerous on-track incidents as the race progressed, eventually bringing the #8 Aston across the line in 6th to record the squad’s third points finish in the Championship.
“We had a very large gird of cars at Silverstone at the weekend;” commented Motorbase Performance Team Principal David Bartrum. “One of the biggest we’ve seen in the British GT but it also meant that we had a lot more GT3 cars racing which made the job even more difficult than usual so the drivers did a sterling job in qualifying to secure a good grid slot.”
“With the changing weather conditions and extreme rain that we had it was a great leveller and certainly made for a more interesting race and threw up a few anomalies;” continued Bartrum.
“The Bentley going out of the race was pivotal, closely followed by Jonny Adam and Derek Johnson and then Liam Griffin when he got tangled up with a GT4 which threw the race wide open. I’m glad to say that Phil and Ross did a great job in the race to stay out of trouble and to keep pushing and we were able to secure P6 in the race which is a really good result.”
The Team Boss added; “Phil did an exceptional job on the opening stint and was rightly so awarded the Gentleman’s Driver of the Weekend. Everyone worked really hard all weekend and I was very pleased with the effort from the team and the drivers in such a tough race. We made a good step forward and are now looking forward to the test and race at Spa.”
The Motorbase squad head to Belgium next for the only overseas round on the British GT Championship calendar at the world-famous Spa Francorchamps circuit on July 8/9, with the Kent-based squad currently sitting in 7th place overall in the Teams standings.
