One of the problems Roy Hodgson will have in Brazil is the dearth of quality central defenders at his disposal.
Charlton could soon be in the same boat. It seems unlikely that either Richard Wood or Leon Cort will be offered new deals and it appears Dorian Dervite is close to agreeing a deal to join Bolton.
Dervite had a fine season and is the best footballing central defender at The Valley. He is cultured enough to be able to play in midfield and at 25, is approaching his prime.
Dervite has spent time at Lille, Tottenham, Southend and Villareal. The Lille born player was capped seven by France at Under-21 level and the Addicks were keen to retain his services.
In his two seasons at The Valley, Devite has made 75 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals. Charlton will be hoping to persuade the personable defender to extend his stay at the club.
Dervite’s regular partner, Michael Morrison, is also out of contract next month and has yet to agree a new deal. Morrison is keen to stay with the club, so hopefully his situation will be sorted out quickly. If negotiations hit a snag, the Addicks will face the possibility of being without all of their current senior central defenders for the 2014/15 season.
Another player who has announced he will leave the club this summer is Cedric Evina. Evina has become a peripheral figure of recent times and Morgan Fox has overtaken him as Rhoys Wiggins’ deputy.
There are also stories circulating that the head coach’s position at The Valley for next season will not be clarified until after the final round of Belgian league fixtures this weekend.
Jose Riga would be a popular choice to continue but he is also alleged to be interesting both Fulham and Queens Park Rangers.
Riga is thought to be keen to continue his work at The Valley but the situation is unlikely to be clarified until next week.
Charlton have confirmed that they will play Welling on Saturday 12 July and Portsmouth on Saturday 2 August. With the league season kicking-off a week later, the game at Fratton Park will be the Addicks’ last warm-up game.
Ebbsfleet have confirmed that they will play the Addicks at Stonebridge Road on Tuesday 22 July.
Confirmation is awaited of a tournament to be staged in Belgium on the weekend of 5/6 July, involving the teams under Roland Duchatelet’s ownership.
Charlton are also expected to spend a week training in Spain and play a couple of games, as usual. That would probably mean that the Addicks would be looking to arrange another game or two in England to complete their schedule.
