Saturday sees the next instalment of one of the fiercest rivalries in Kent football as Faversham Town welcome Sittingbourne to Salters Lane for “El Swale-co”.
For Faversham joint boss Phil Miles, the game is one to be looked forward to as he explained to KSN.
He told us, “I’ve played in quite a few Sittingbourne Faversham games,” laughed the Faversham joint boss.
“It’s the closest town to us after all! It’s the biggest derby I ever played in. I know I played in a lot of Herne Bay Whitstable games and they will say that that rivalry rivals this one.”
“My Dad comes from Sittingbourne but has spent most of his life in Faversham and played for the club against them as I did, and now my son will be playing on Saturday against Sittingbourne if we pick him.”
“Personally, it’s a massive derby and always has been even against some of those massive Sittingbourne sides when they came into money and went to go up and tried to push on.”
“I’ve had some really good derbies against Sittingbourne and I’m sure the tradition will continue with the Sittingbourne boys that are in their team along with the Faversham boys that are in our team and so for me Faversham against Sittingbourne games are massive, they really are!”
“It’s the old cliché with the bragging rights with supporters and hopefully they’ll bring a few with them on Saturday wanting their team to win as will our supporters be wanting us to come away with the three points.”
“We’re reasonably happy with our start. We conceded late against Guernsey to deny us three points – created numerous chances against Chichester, but got nothing and then had two good results against Hythe – the second a result that we could never have dreamed of after we played ever so well.”
“We would like to have a couple more League points, but we’ll settle for what we’ve got especially with two home games coming up.”
“Our supporters have been fantastic since Danny and I took over last year – the gates went up to well over 200 every week. And we’re hoping, expecting a good crowd at the weekend – all supporters will want their side to win and hopefully it will be a good game.”
“We know how tough it will be as Sittingbourne have made a good start as well and they’ll come down full of confidence which I’m sure will make for a good game.”
“It’s important to get a good start to the season and I think we are where we are and it’s about right for the performances that we’ve put in – we’re happy with what we’ve done so far, but will be even happier come Saturday with another win!”
“Hopefully we’ll be able to create chances and put in a couple of good performances and with a bit of luck we can come through the month unbeaten if we can with six games in September including Cup games. We’re getting there – we’re moving in the right direction, but the question is can we show up in the right games and continue to create chances.”
